I. The Context of David’s Distress

- To understand the power of this verse, let’s look at the context. David and his men

returned to their town, Ziklag, to find it burned and their families taken captive by the

Amalekites. Their homes were gone. Their loved ones had been captured. The men

who fought with David, who trusted him as their leader, were now so distraught that they

spoke of stoning him. David was not only dealing with his own loss, but also the anger

and grief of the people he led.
